Ballet + Lyrical

Ballet is the foundation of all dance forms. It is a classical dance form characterized by grace and precision of movement. This class consists of barre and center work concentrating on proper technique and body alignment. Ballet terminology is taught.

Lyrical dance is the fusion of ballet and jazz technique with little more freedom of expression and style while still emphasizing proper technique. Students are encouraged to explore their interpretation of music lyrics while telling a story with movement that can be fluid or abstract. Dancers work on their flexibility, technique and musicality each class.

Modern

Students will learn the basics of Graham and Hawkins release-based modern technique, beginning on the floor and working up to standing and moving across the floor in leaps and combinations. Classes will emphasize core integration and initiation, spinal awareness and flexibility, and practical application of modern dance fundamentals. Other styles of modern will be explored such as improvisation and non-traditional partnering weight-sharing technique.

Acrobatic Arts

This class is not a gymnastics or a power-tumbling class. However, this class does incorporate gymnastics technique with a touch of basic tumble skills.  It is a fusion of Acrobatics and Dance. Acro dance techniques include limbering, basic tumbling, partnering, flexibility, contortion, strength, and balancing. The aim is to get students in this class into good physical condition as Acro dance is the most physically demanding dance style we offer. Therefore the emphasis will be on flexibility, strength, balance and endurance exercises.

Tap

The enjoyment of tap comes from being able to “talk with your feet” – creating a huge variety of percussive sounds on the floor in various rhythmic combinations. This class teaches rhythm, coordination, terminology, and basic tap choreography. Students will put the fundamentals to work by learning new steps, rhythms, patterns, and combinations.

Contemporary

This style of dance incorporates lyrical, modern, ballet and jazz. Contemporary dance is all about connecting the mind and the body through dance movements. It is typically done barefoot and there is a heavy emphasis on strong controlled legwork. Students will learn how to release into the floor, while pushing against it for stability. They will play with inversions, work on head- to- tail connectivity, and increase strength and flexibility. This style often allows the dancer creative freedom, and can be danced to a variety of different music.
